Maintaining Tradition with a Contemporary Twist
Harbor Tower, built in a traditional colonial style, had to retain its historical charm while also reflecting the sleek and contemporary elements seen in its sister building, the River Tower. The goal was not to erase the colonial identity but to refresh it, infusing modern elements that would bring the building into the present without clashing with its history.
Nase’s vision was clear from the start: to create “two buildings, yet one collective community and brand.” This required more than just cosmetic changes; it was about finding harmony between two architectural styles and creating an aesthetic thread that unified the residents’ experience.
Located in a region with deep maritime roots, Nase found it essential to introduce a subtle nautical theme to her design. However, she carefully avoided the coastal cliches often seen in Virginia’s seaside towns. Instead, she integrated elegant nautical motifs—like soft blues and clean lines—that evoke a maritime influence without overwhelming the space. This restrained approach created a refined, subtle nod to the area’s history, grounding the design in place but not in stereotype.
Despite the grandeur of the renovation, Nase worked with a modest budget, demonstrating her resourcefulness and creativity. The outcome is a testament to her ability to stretch resources without compromising on quality. Her expertise allowed her to select materials and design elements that not only fit within the financial constraints but also elevated the overall look and feel of the space.
A Vision of Community
Beyond aesthetics, Nase’s focus on community was central to the project. She sought to design spaces where residents of both Harbor Tower and River Tower would feel a sense of belonging. Through the thoughtful curation of shared spaces and the melding of architectural styles, she succeeded in reinforcing a unified brand for the two towers, bringing them together as one collective community—and a place that feels like home.
