Here at Harbor’s Edge, we’re passionate about helping our residents maintain their lifestyle as they age. A large part of that is making sure they’re able to stay physically fit in a healthy way that works for them.
We have a monthly newsletter centered around fitness and the events and programs taking place that month. This month, our Director of Health and Wellness, Laurie Gris, created a program surrounding March Madness. Following each game, residents are encouraged to complete a certain exercise depending on which team won. This is just one example of the creative, engaging fitness programs our staff at Harbor’s Edge come up with every month!
Our newsletter also offers tips on how to stay healthy each month, including which fruits and vegetables are currently in season and the benefits they can offer. One step further, we have a monthly cooking class, Cooking on the Edge, where residents can learn how to make a healthy dish.
We also host a monthly wellness lecture, focusing on different topics and areas of wellness each session. This month, we were joined by experts for a presentation on bone health. Residents learned how to keep their bones strong through nutrition and exercise.
There’s always a variety of wellness classes available for residents to attend, including yoga and aquatics. We have personal trainers available on-site to help residents find the right exercises for them in the fitness center. The golf simulator has also been a big hit with many of our residents. We even hosted a two-round golf tournament this month!
We often have scheduled pool and Wii bowling tournaments as well, but residents are always welcome to participate in unplanned games with friends too! Depending on the season, we have fitness-focused outings where residents can engage with the external community while staying active.
From bike rides on the Elizabeth River Trail to kayaking and walks for a cause, like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the upcoming Norfolk Optimism Walk, our residents love living in such a beautiful, engaging community. There’s always something fun to do if you’re looking to stay active here at Harbor’s Edge!
