A neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital McCance Center for Brain Health has developed a list of questions called the Brain Care Score to help patients self-evaluate their brain habits. These questions can be used, in part, to predict people’s risk for developing dementia, stroke, and depression later in life.
This assessment asks about parts of your physical health and behavior that doctors believe to have a direct relationship to your future cognitive and mental health. Some topics covered in the test include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, BMI, diet, drinking and smoking habits, physical activity, sleep quality, stress levels, connections with friends and family, and outlook on life.
The best thing about this test? All the questions are about changeable parts of your life. If a medical professional expresses concern over your answers, you can make lifestyle changes that will improve your score in every question.
However, this is by no means a conclusive test. While it can estimate your risk, it cannot tell you for sure whether you will or won’t develop dementia, stroke, or depression. It can point you toward aspects of your lifestyle you can bring up with your doctor to learn about the changes you can make to keep both your brain and body healthier.
