Recently, The Virginian-Pilot highlighted a powerful example of intergenerational connection taking place right here among our assisted living residents at Harbor’s Edge. The article spotlighted the partnership between Harbor’s Edge and Old Dominion University’s recreational therapy program, where ODU students spend the semester building meaningful relationships with older adults while gaining hands-on clinical experience.
ODU students worked one-on-one and in group settings with assisted living residents—many in their late 90s and beyond—planning activities, conducting informal assessments, and fostering genuine friendships. The program culminated in a joyful, beach-themed celebration where students honored residents with playful superlatives like “Most Inspiring” and “Most Compassionate Heart,” underscoring the deep bonds formed along the way. The article also emphasized how the program breaks down ageist stereotypes while enriching residents’ lives through social engagement, purpose, and laughter.
Harbor’s Edge CEO Colleen Baybutt praised the collaboration and its impact:
“Our partnership with Old Dominion University is incredibly meaningful. These students bring energy, curiosity, and compassion into our community, and the connections they form truly enhance our residents’ quality of life. It’s a beautiful example of learning and living coming together.”
At Harbor’s Edge, a LifePlan community, residents typically join us in independent living and are able to enjoy support as their needs increase. Community partnerships like this reflect a shared commitment to lifelong growth, purpose, and human connection—at every age and all levels of living from independent living to assisted living including memory support and skilled nursing.
